History Of SD & SDHC cards

The SD (Secure Digital) Card 1999 superceeded the MMC (Multi Media Card) which was introduced in 1997.

The SD card soon became the generic card storage system for almost all multimedia devices such as digital cameras and video camcorders because of its small size and large capacity for data storage making it ideal for images and video storage.

SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity, SD 2.0) is an extension of the SD standard that appeared in June 2006. Theoretically reaching a maximum capacity of up to 2 TB (2048 GB). However the SD Card association have artificially defined the maximum limit of SDHC capacity to 32 GB.

Other variations of the card came in miniSD(2003) and microSD(2005) versions.
